About Us

The Primary and Community Care Academy is an overarching service which leads on the learning, development and research of the primary and community care team within General Practice, Dental, Community Pharmacy and in the future Optometry.

The Academy is focused on the training, education and upskilling of all of the primary care workforce.

In 2022 the Academy submitted a business case, and had approval and investment from the health board, HEIW and Welsh Government to develop the Academy vision at pace.

Our key objectives are to:

  • Strengthen the skills and capability of the primary and community care workforce through training and education programmes delivered through a hub and spoke model by 2025.
  • Build and deliver a training and education programme that is driven by the needs of the population and the primary and community workforce by 2025.
  • Develop and implement a recruitment and retention strategy for primary care in North Wales to address the limitations in capacity by 2025.
  • Increase the number of Research and Development studies and evaluation exercises within health board managed primary and community services by 30% by 2025. This should be within training Hubs and Academy programmes.

Primary Care Development Nurse

Shelley Lewis

Primary Care Development Nurse

Shelley Lewis

My journey into general practice started at the turn of the millennium in January 2000. Having initially completed all essential skill sets and achieving Diploma’s in chronic disease domains, I went on to complete a BSc (Hons) Specialist Practitioner Qualification in General Practice in 2005 and then on to complete my independent prescribing and Masters in Advanced Clinical Practice and have worked as a clinical ANP in general practice until 2019.

In April 2019, I joined the Health Board Primary and Community Care Team for East IHC and gained experience as both Practice Development Nurse and Interim Lead Nurse before recently joining the BCUHB Primary Care Academy in August 2023.

Professional educational in partnership with clinical supervision that facilitates the translation of theory to practice is fundamental to the provision of high quality, evidenced based care to all of our patients and in the development of a knowledgeable, confident and competent workforce.

I feel very fortunate to have developed a career in general practice and having travelled this educational pathway myself, I now feel equally fortunate to hold a position that supports the education and training for health care professionals who have also chosen general practice as their career.
