Mental Health

GP+ Programme for Mental Health is available in Bangor and the surrounding areas.

You will be supporting local Mental Health services, undertaking supervised clinics within community and secondary care settings. Supported by a designated Mental Health Consultant to undertake a Section 12 certification.

Objectives & Training

  • Undertake section 12 certification supported by a Consultant. This accreditation is gained based on appropriate experience and exposure to mental health presentations in a variety of settings
  • Mental Health work may be undertaken in a number of different sub-specialties
  • Direct supervision provided by a designated Mental Health Consultant

Course Content

Quarter: 1

  • Induction/Welcome to the Practice.
  • Meeting with GP+ team – course overview
  • Finalising job plan
  • Identifying learning and development needs
  • Meet mentor
  • First peer support group meeting
  • Commence Mental Health session (3 sessions per week)

Quarter: 2

  • Peer support group meeting
  • Mental Health sessions (3 sessions per week)

Quarter: 3

  • Peer support group meeting
  • Mental Health sessions (3 sessions per week)
  • Meet with practice management and GP+ team to plan for stepping off the training course

Quarter: 4

  • Peer support group meeting
  • Mental Health sessions (3 sessions per week)

Towards the end of your training programme the GP+ team will meet with you and the practice management team to agree next steps and discuss what support is required once you step off the programme​.

​Although stepping off the programme could look different for each GP, your salaried GP role is guaranteed and your salary will be reviewed. It is envisioned that for the Mental Health GP role you will continue to split your working time between Mental Health and primary care.
